About the Producer
Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Labastida, at the heart of Rioja Alavesa, lies the hidden gem winery, Finca de la Rica. Here, the legacy of the Amurrio Barroeta brothers, Arturo and Javier, continues to unfold as the fourth generation of a lineage of winegrowers from Alava.
Spanning 35 hectares of meticulously tended vineyards at an average elevation of 1,900ft (580m) these vines enjoy an Atlantic micro-climate due to their unique topography. Soils are calcareous clay. Protected by the Sierra de Toloño mountains, their north-south exposure along the Ebro River also naturally safeguards the vines. With vine age averaging at an impressive 40 years, each grape carries the wisdom of generations, resulting in wines of unparalleled depth and character, which you can certainly taste in each of their bottlings.
While Tempranillo undoubtedly takes the lead, FdR takes pride in its treasure trove of nearly century-old Garnacha vines and the venerable Viura vines, some dating back over eight decades. It's a testament to their commitment to preserving tradition while embracing innovation.
In 2009, a new vision was born. The collaboration between the Amurrio Barroeta brothers, Ignacio Uruñuela de la Rica, and Luis López González laid the groundwork for Finca de la Rica as we know it today. Two years of meticulous preparation culminated in 2011 with the realization of this dream.
FdR is more than just a winery; it's a beacon of passion, dedication, and innovation. Their journey has been a relentless pursuit – not just of crafting exceptional wines, but of creating a cultural experience that resonates with people's hearts and minds. We get to drink these cuvées, which, when you taste them, are amongst the best one can find in the region.
