About the Producer

Bodegas La Mateo is based in Aldeanueva de Ebro, in Rioja Oriental, at the foot of Monte Yerga - an area shaped by a wide range of altitudes, exposures, and soils. Around 6,500 hectares of vineyards spread between the Ebro valley and the slopes that climb up to 800 meters. Tempranillo in the valley, Garnacha and Graciano at higher elevations.

It all started with a vineyard planted on the slopes of Monte Yerga, marking the beginning of a family story that continues today. The Mateo family has been working these vineyards for seven generations, with over 100 hectares of their own vines, ranging from younger plots to vines over 70–80 years old, spread across altitudes from 300 to 800 meters. Their work is rooted in the vineyard, where decisions are made with a focus on balance, observation, and respect for each site. From pruning to harvest, every step is guided by the goal of obtaining healthy fruit and reflecting the character of the land.

Letargo is their main project: a classic Rioja style with a more contemporary approach. Mostly Tempranillo from the Ebro valley, with softer tannins, brighter fruit, and a more approachable profile than what you’d normally expect. French oak is used to add structure and elegance without dominating the wine.
